What you thought you knew
I grew up watching Greg Louganis platform diving and admired his skill and wondered about the rumors of his sexual orientation. The autobiography aided my understanding of the difficult life he endured and the overcoming attitude that Greg displayed. Although I personally disagree with his personal choices I still came to admire the man.

What you didn't know about the Chinese in America?
1 von 1 finden das hilfreich This work answered all my questions regarding the hows and whys the Chinese were brought to America and what has happened to them since. I was especially interested in the interplay of the rise of Communism in China and the impact this had on the Chinese in America during this turbulent time in modern China's history. I have a new found respect and admiration for the struggles they have endured.

Intuitively, As Parents We Were Mistaken
As most people who either have children or thought about raising them you believed the current and intuitively thinking that as a parent you had the most impact on the character and personality of your child. I know now I was wrong in my thinking as so are a great many other people.
Judith Rich Harris the author is very perceptive, humorous and diligent in explaining how the misunderstanding of predominant parental influence came to be viewed as unquestionable truth. She details in a very specific and lucid manner how this viewpoint came to be adopted and is still regarded as true today. She then begins to take apart the assumption and replace it with what I now understand and via personal experience see to be the truer understanding of just who and what influences our children.
The short answer is that heredity is half the answer and the remainder is peer group dynamics. Parents do shape their children but only in the values adopted and behaviors the children use when around the parents. Otherwise the children become what their peer group ie the outside world demands.
The book is a fast read and very enlightening and entertaining. If you have children, or had children the insights shared from reading this book will liberate your understanding and explain the sometimes contradictory and confusing behavior of your children.
