Nothing to recommend it.
I'm very disappointed in this Brahms Symphony set. It is generally devoid of any warmth or intensity that one should expect of Brahms performances. The string section is very thin and actually gets lost in the texture at times. Thus the brass and timpani play with a chamber music approach, which often leaves them very un-brasslike. I bought the set sight unseen based on a live performance on line by this conductor with the Vienna Phil. Obviously, the performing forces on the cd set are not anything like the VPO. It was a waste of money.

Only of interest to those who look for historic recordings. Not for a Wagner beginner.
The sound from 1954 is not as good as I had hoped. There are much better recordings from that year, such as the Reiner Also Sprach on RCA. The performance is inconsistent in regard to both balance and interpretation. The singers are mostly good enough. The tenor is outstanding, actually. But this recording is only for those who already have a good Walkuere or two (or more) and just want to hear how Furtwaengler did it. Otherwise, use your money towards something newer and better...maybe Leinsdorf or Solti.

Raff Symphonies 8-11...the 4 seasons!
Great pieces that should be better known. The performances are professional quality. I'm very pleased with this purchase.
