Lack of fact-checking ... and no mention of the lasting effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on New York!
In general, over the years, the NFT annual guides to New York and other cities have been very good and provide excellent local-resident insights to both residents and visitors alike.
However, given that the 2022 edition of the NFT New York guide was published in November 2021, I was surprised to see that some of the listings in my own neighborhood, for restaurants and bars, are badly out of date. They should have been removed many months previously, long before the 2022 guide was pu,blished in in some cases perhaps even before the 2021 guide was published.
Two restaurants and bars within less than quarter of a mile from where I live in the Chelsea district and which are listed in the guide closed down permanently fairly early in the course of the pandemic, in early 2021 at latest, so it is pretty clear that nobody on the staff of NFT bothered to check the Chelsea bar and restaurant listings for accuracy at any time in the second half of 2021. I've found a few restaurants in other city neighborhoods which are also listed but to the best of my knowledge closed down permanently during the pandemic. So I know I can't rely on the accuracy of the 2022 version's listings whatsoever, particularly for bars and restaurants which aren't local to me.
A couple of other things bothered me about the book. For instance, in the pages describing New York JFK Airport, the book lists Delta Air Lines (domestic flights) as operating from Terminal 3. Terminal 3 hasn't existed for many years: the former Pan Am Worldport terminal, it was torn down a decade or more ago. Delta did once operate from Terminal 3, but for many years now has operated its domestic flights from JFK from Terminal 2. Additionally, as an aviation-industry professional reporter and editor, I can see that several of the airlines listed as operating from JFK no longer exist, while many other airlines which have served JFK for some time now are not even mentioned, let alone given a terminal allocation in the guide.
Last but by no means least, I was also very surprised to see that the 2022 NFT New York guide makes no mention of the many effects the COVID-19 has had on the city, few of them positive but many of them permanent. New York was the United States' first major epicenter for the pandemic and it has remained an epicenter throughout the subsequent surges of infection caused by the Delta and Omicron variants of the coronavirus. New York has been one of the cities in the world most affected by COVID-19 and yet the NFT New York 2022 fails to mention the pandemic at all, as far as I can see from looking through its pages.
This all speaks to me of a distinct lack of timely fact-checking by the NFT staff before the 2022 guide was published and also indicates there might well have been a conscious editorial decision by the book's editors to pretend that the COVID-19 pandemic has never existed, as far as New York is concerned. I simply don't know why they would want to ignore the fact of COVID-19's huge impact on the city: it would make the guide much more informative if they had discussed it in the guide's pages.
While I concede that the pandemic has made it very slightly more difficult to fact-check if NYC bars and restaurants listed in the guide are still open for business, all the editorial staff needed to do in almost every case to fact-check was to go online and look at either Google or Yelp to see what the latest news of each listed bar, restaurant or store was. That they clearly did not do so strongly suggests editorial laziness and slackness to me on the part of the NFT staff who compiled the 2022 New York NFT guide.

What a beautiful and impressive model
This model is highly accurate and impressive in its size (at 1:32 scale), accuracy, quality of painting and detail. Some of the additional accessories aren't easily to install if you want to do so (I personally couldn't but then I'm pretty ham-fisted), but it's lovely to display the model on its stand in flying configuration with the landing gear stowed, the undercarriage doors closed and the individually numbered information card showing that it's one of a limited edition of 1,100 examples of the model of this particular individual aircraft.
