One of the more interesting authors in an admittedly mediocre age. Perhaps the best of his works.
When one has read such outstanding masters of the genre as M. R. James, Algernon Blackwood, Arthur Machen, Edith Wharton, HPL, etc., King is pretty thin stuff. He does frequently provide interesting general observations, the section of the two drunks getting to the city dump is certainly funny, and there is overall much pleasure to be derived from reading this (some very eerie moments, for instance), but there are many better authors of this type, some of them, even among modern writers, unjustly little known. Of the admittedly mere 3 King novels I read (the other two being The Shining and Pet Sematary), this is certainly the best, as the others were spun out unconscionably, too much stuff on little kids and other dull padding matter, so, personally, I would recommend anyone interested in King to at least read this one to get the flavor of his style, and then go on to others if still curious.

Czerny: Piano Sonatas, Vol. I. Martin Jones, piano.
After a rather slow start with the opening sonata, a piece with little to distinguish it, this CD really picks up with a group of works of stunning brilliance and inventiveness. Jones tosses off the formidable technical difficulties with aplomb and obvious enjoyment, and presents us with a program of very significant music that obviously stops just short of the acknowledged masterpieces of the repertoire. For a good idea of what was happening in music of this epoch outside of the supreme heights achieved by Beethoven, Schumann, and Chopin, yet with a richness all its own, you would do well to explore this disc.

Feeble Performance
I've used this every day for the past 2 weeks on my 4 cats. Only rarely does it catch any fleas. After combing and getting from zero to two fleas per cat, I'll use a regular old plain steel comb and get 2 to 4 fleas the first stroke. The little buzzer is supposed to stop when it catches something but I usually find there is nothing between the teeth when it stops, and sometimes it stops and starts again without my doing anything. From now on I'll just use a $5-10 regular flea comb and a cup of hot water. Pretty much a waste.
