    The Drift
    07. Dez 2017
Very riveting --- a page turner!!
This novel is a gripping, visceral book about a former lawyer who due to mental illness becomes a homeless man who rides the rails. He takes on a personal quest to help a friend find his missing daughter. The details and characterizations throughout are so realistic and believable that you would swear the book describes the author John Ridley's life journey. It all builds and builds with suspense to a very satisfying end. Unfortunately, the book which was written in 2002 is now out of print, but plenty of used copies are available here on Ebay which is where I got mine. If you love a good read do yourself a favor and pick up 'The Drift'. Fair Warning: If you do you won't be able to put it back down!
Withdrawn Traces: Searching for the Truth about Richey Manic, Foreword by Rachel
    01. Mai 2019
    Fell short of expectations
I was excited to read this book about Richey Edwards when I first heard of it. Release got delayed (at least here in the US) so the anticipation to read it built over several weeks. It was an an depth look at his life both inside and outside of the band Manic Street Preachers. Of course his mysterious disappearance is the central theme throughout 'Withdrawn Traces.' With that said the book relies much more on speculation than anything else regarding his fate. Several of his writings over the years are presented and searched for meaning as well as statements he made in interviews etc. One of the things that drew me to it was a teaser in the articles before it came out about some mystery woman named Vivian that he apparently spent time with at the hotel he disappeared from. Another teaser was a rumor about him now living on a kibitz over in Israel. Disappointingly, neither of these possibilities was explored in any depth at all which is what drew me to the book in the first place. It's like they teased you with "new information", but this quickly fell into the long on speculation and short on facts routine that has plagued this unsolved mystery from the start.... Some strengths are that his sister Rachael Edwards made significant contributions to the book which really helped to personalize his story. Also, the lengths the authors went to in fleshing out his biography and background were very thorough. If you are fascinated by this Rock and Roll mystery and the back story then you will probably enjoy this book. On the other hand if you buy it looking for real insight into his fate etc. etc. then you will likely be very disappointed --- buyer beware.
