Great value Chromebook
Chromebooks have been around for a while now and this particular model came out towards the end of 2013, which in normal laptop terms would mean it was fast approaching it's use by date. But Chromebooks are not normal Laptops. Instead, Chromebooks run Chrome OS instead of Windows which is best described as an enhanced version of the Chrome web browser most people are familiar with, and because of the way they work they tend not to slowdown over time like traditional PC's. Instead almost everything is done literally within a browser-like window just like you were surfing the Internet, which most of the time you actually are, and as all the Asus has to contend with its basically a website the very modest hardware copes very well.
Back when they were introduced this need to do everything in the cloud was seen as a bit of a problem, but Google were very forward thinking and these days most of the things you do in ANY type of laptop requires an Internet connection anyway so it's not so much of am issue. Programs such so Word, Internet Explorer and Skype and covered by Google own versions such as Docs, Chrome or Hangouts and for everyday use there isn't much you can't do on Chromebook that you can on a Windows laptop these days, and you can even run adequate online versions of Microsoft's office should you need a bit of familiarity. Many applications also have an offline mode for the rare occasions when you are all of of Wifi.
The Asus C300 itself is light, offers an excellent battery life that would put most budget laptops to shame. I regularly get 8hrs+ of use, and it charges quickly too when it does need topping up. While being so light means it's a great laptop to take away with you if does have drawbacks with regards to build. The keyboard, while great to type with does flex a bit in the middle. The lid also seems a little flimsy but the hinge seems well made so I don't this this will be an issue. Speaking of the case the Asus comes in a selection of bright off-primary colours if you like that sort of thing. It also has all the ports you'd expect, 2xUSB, a combined headphone/mic 3.5mm socket, SD card reader, power jackplug for charging and even an HDMI for hooking up an external monitor or TV. In fact the only real weak spot on the Asus is is screen, which isn't terrible, but because it uses some old tech doesn't seem as sharp or colour rich as some of its contemporaries. In fact it's a bit of a washout if I'm honest, which is a shame if you watch a lot of Netflix, but not so much of an issue if you're just searching the Internet or knocking out a spreadsheet.
So, you could spend more money on a budget Windows machine but traditional 'cheap' laptops are always disappointing in my experience. You could spend a little bit more on a newer Chromebook and to be honest that wouldnt be such a bad idea. But if you are looking for a capable machine that does 95% of what people do on a laptop and save a few quid then don't be put off thinking that as this machines long in the tooth then it's not much good, because if you pick one up at a reasonable price (and there are plenty on eBay) then you could be picking up a great little computing bargain.
