Better even than the startling strapline
I'm only part way thru this book, but stayed up until the wee hours to read.
The strapline is gripping; but so far, it's the psychotherapist (who wants to help the main character) who is pushed to the forefront.
The journals of the main character, ominously leading to the date of the murder, are compelling.
Who is telling the truth?
Who is equipped to help anyone else?

One word: Zakalwe
I've been devouring the Culture novels in random order. I saw a character describe himself 'with his real name' as Zakalwe at the end of Surface Detail. How lovely to find Use of Weapons, then.

Authentic: yes; achievable, maybe, depending on your supermarket
There really should be a photo of each recipe. There isn't, which is a shame.
People who can afford the ingredients (or who can afford to make the 'required' base pastes etc), this is your baking bible for everything fabulous that you know of German baking.
For those of us who can't afford to source the 'Pantry Ingredients' ("high-fat European-style butter", etc), you can substitute what you can find more affordably. It won't be 'authentic' but what you make will taste very good indeed.
I have made several recipes from this book for very 'conservative with a small c' tasters, modifying some ingredients for what is readily available locally in the UK, and everyone has been wowed by the results.
I heartily recommend this book, with the caveat that not all of the esoteric ingredients are necessary if you merely want a tasty treat. The pictures are my version of Nussecken (p28).
