Musical Performance and Religion
I saw a portion of this on PBS briefly. I was impressed with the singing of Francoise Atlan and several other groups, from a musical point of view. I do not attribute the musical performance to religion necessarily, although the DVD seems to imply a strong connection. It is clear that singing, chants, and just instrumentals do accompany religious ceremonies. Should the DVD not devote more to the ceremonious side? I find the comment of one person on the "godlessness" of Chinese society somewhat out of place. I also think that the lack of representation from Buddhism a serious drawback (is there no sound of the soul from Buddhism? Or is that because the producer of the video has little understanding of Buddhism?) Nevertheless, the performance was enough to arouse my interest to purchase a copy. I will, however, not buy another one like this unless the coverage is more inclusive, and the connection between the musical performance and religion is presented more convincingly.
