Because: Lord of the Rings!
I think that they did a good job making a movie out of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic. It's a movie so there's a good deal of artistic interpretation, but it doesn't make it bad. I love the series, and I'm in the process of collecting the Hobbit movies as well.
