Excellent anthology of 14 short ghost stories.
1 von 1 finden das hilfreich These are excellent ghost stories. Many were new to me and each held my attention. Roald Roald Dahl says in his introduction that he compiled a selection of 24 tales from reading as many as 749. This collection includes 14 of them (shame on Penguin for imposing an arbitrary limit and not printing all 24! I bet they could have included another at no extra cost on the seven blank pages at the back). He selected them originally with a television series in mind, so I wonder if he was thinking more of their dramatic possibilities rather than their effectiveness as short stories, because he dismisses the 725 he did not select as 'rubbish'. Some may have been, but there are many famous stories he did not include. However, these 14 are really good. Shame on television as well for not going into production! Dahl's introduction is worth reading for its philosophical reflections on writing.

Excellent content, poor design.
The book is an excellent work of scholarship, packed with information and inciteful comments. The only downside is the design. It looks impressive, being large-format and sewn in sections and bound in real cloth, until one starts to read it. Then you find it is too large to hold open easily and much of the text, printed very pale to contrast with the black of the main text, is almost invisible. The pictures do not take advantage of the page size, they are mostly very small. The design matters, the scholarship is accessible when it is clearly presented and five hundred years ago printers understood that the only colour for type which can be read easily is a jet-black on a white background, anything else is a struggle. But designers don't read! I would still recommend the book for its good content and excellent price.

Thoroughly recommended
2 von 2 finden das hilfreich Excellent production quality, apart from the irritatingly slow interface when you just want it to start playing. It really shows what a revolutionary standard Gerry Anderson achieved with Thunderbirds, a small independent company did this when the BBC was blurred black and white and slow and had actors who just shouted their parts. The puppets ACT, the special effects are awesome, the incidents of great seriousness, the photography sharp and bright, the music is astonishing (Barry Gray was a genius!), and it's all lavished on a children's television series from 1964/5. It far exceeds modern standards of children's television. Lots of interesting extras too.
