WIsh there was more to this book!
Oh, such a wonderful book, and way too short. It is like a teaser for more to come. But if you are interested in marionettes, American Art of the art deco period, or screen prints, then this is well worth your checking it out. It definately makes you want to go down to the New Mexico museum of Art and see all his things that the family donated to the museum. It is my hope that they will either
1. publish an expanded version of this book, to show all 65 of his marionettes, (it only shows about half of them), and to show and talk more about his print work,
or
2. that they will print a sequel to it, with that information in it.
But this book was designed and printed as a fund raiser to restore the marionettes and make duplicates of them so his shows could be put on again without risking the fragile original carvings.
For doll and puppet lovers this book is interesting, because it is "narrated" by one of the puppets! But it also briefly touches on his career, his block prints, and other items of interest to Baumann collectors, along with a brief history of puppets, with some wonderful historical block prints of that history.
I purchased it because I wanted to see the woodcarvings, and the wrap-around book cover of his dragon is so wonderful. My only disappointment was that it was not long enough...alas...

Calling puppet fanciers, art teachers, and magicians!
1 von 1 finden das hilfreich This was a puppet book I had not remembered running across in 50 years of puppeteering, but upon receiving it and looking thru it, I recognized some of the techniques inside the book that some of the Northwest Puppeteers have been experimenting with. I ordered it because it looked like something I should have in my library. I opened it to find it of far better quality then I expected, with ideas suitable for someone just starting out, or someone whose been building for years. It is also very suitable for the art or drama teacher, or any teacher dealing with students over 9 years of age, who wants to do something a little different in the fields of construction and design art, or theater arts.
The reader is given detailed instructions and patterns for building a basic human form, and then animal (Dog) form, with followup instructions for how to alter those patterns for any other kind of character...then there is full script for the human and dog marionette to do a MAGIC SHOW! with instructions and ideas for all kinds of props etc. to build for the show.
It is a great book, and an older child could read, build, and put on the show in the book all by him/herself!

great display doll for older children
0 von 1 finden das hilfreich At half the original price, this was a great doll for my 11 yr old granddaughter to display and handle gently.
Designed and packaged for display MIB or out of the box play, it was tricky to debox without damaging the clothing or hair. And the multipart hand glove combination didn't wish to pop back together correctly after I had to take it apart to get it out of its tie downs.
I did not allow the six year old to do more than look and gently hold, as she would have undressed the doll which would have damaged both the clothing and the way the clothing was tagged together to create the fashions, nor did I allow the permanent destruction of the hair do which results when the child tries to brush it.
