Complex religious dramas for modern viewers
Two excellent films for Catholic viewers and all who are interested in religious and psychological dramas. "Catholics" is the story of a community of Irish monks whose maintaining of traditional worship and customs (the Latin Mass), sparks media interest and rejection from a modernized and ecumenical Roman Catholic Church. This sparks a crisis of faith for all the monks. A young Martin Sheen plays the liberal "inquisitor" sent out from Rome; while Trevor Howard plays the Abbot, a man tormented by personal religious doubt and depression, who is asked to put his own mental health at risk in order to preserve his community's relation with Church authorities.
"Absolution" is set in an English Catholic boys' school in which teenage passions and rebellion assail a system based on educational traditions, Faith and cultural expectations. A murder sets the stage for a priest's battle to save a student's soul. But gradually it becomes clear that the priest is being manipulated by someone for his own ends. Richard Burton plays the honourable but tormented priest with great distinction. Non-Catholics may find it difficult to follow, but the film is worth seeing. The triumph of good over evil may be a twisting path. . .

Compelling and well-documented history reveals a great man's character!
Cardinal Stepinac was one of the great heroes of the 20th century. His actions during WWII were those of a highly moral churchman challenged continually by the violence, aggressions and hatred of the enemies of his Church and his nation. Stepinac's love of his fellow man made him the protector of the Jewish people in Croatia and of all in need. A campaign of calumny and propaganda was unleashed against him after the War, resulting in his public condemnation in a show trial, imprisonment and ultimately death due secret poisoning. Today, historians are beginning to rehabilitate this man who the Church has declared Martyr and Blessed. This book is an excellent, well-researched contribution to that process and a fascinating read for all who want to understand the times and crises through which he lived.
