Best of both worlds - textbook and biography
In brief, it combines the best of a textbook and a biographical treatment of the subject, with fully one-third of the text being quotes from the various philosophers covered. This makes it readable and accessible and makes me feel like I've met the philosophers who are quoted. It is also encyclopedic in its coverage.
