Help keep your VW Rabbit on the road
1 von 1 finden das hilfreich I have a 1981 VW Rabbit pickup that I have been running for 10 years, plus I just bought a 1986 VW Cabriolet.
I have all the Bentley and Haynes books for these cars, plus the Poor Richard's "Idiot" book.
Anyway, now that these vehicles are over 20 years old, they are becoming collectors items.
This manual is a nice guide to choosing and restoring your firstgemeration (A1, Mk 1) VW Rabbit, Pickup, or Cabriolet.
It even makes good winter reading, when the snow and cold prevent all but the most urgent maintenance.
If you have never restored a car before, this book is a good introduction, too.

Life among the Old Hippies of Waldo and Knox Counties,
1 von 1 finden das hilfreich Author Richard Grant must have lived in and around Belfast and Camden Maine in the 1980s , and possibly earlier and later.
Most of the towns in this book are based on Belfast, Camden, Searsmont, and Appleton, plus the Loring Air Force base in northern Maine.
Somehow, Mr Grant moves the Air Force base about 150 miles closer to the Maine coast than it actually is, but otherwise, a lot of the places and characters are clearly based on real ones.
An old classmate of mine (who was in the hippie culture as it was up here in Maine from the late 60s onward ) reccommended this book to me. She loaned me her copy to read. I liked it so much, I bought my own copy to keep, on ebay.
She said that I read too much nonfiction, and that I would like this book. I had my reservations, as I am more of a techie.
But, I loved this book. Mr Grant successfully fuses the hippie world with the tech world of bioengineering, with a good dose of botany and big business mixed in.
And, he does a great job of it. Just about every paragraph has real substance to it, with witty cultural insight into the milieu of life in Maine in the 1980-1900s era.You will get a l;ot of chuckles while you read this story.
Of, course, the afterlife part is pure science fiction, but it works against the skillfully crafted background and the wacky characters.
The story line advanes well in a slightly crazy world. The ending is not too obvious, and makes a good wrapup of this tall tale.
This book came out about 1995, but still reads well today. Mr Grant knows his science, so it has aged well. And, the old hippies are pretty much as they always have been, up this way.
This book is now out in paperback, but a good ebay search will bag you a decent hardcover copy. The reason that you ought to go for the hardcover, is that you will probably want to read it a second or third time.
If you think Maine fiction is only Stephen King and Carolyn Chute, you will find this a great change of pace.

A very good manual to keep your old Volvo 240 on the road
This is an excellent manual for these older Volvo 240 cars. The Volvo factory manuals are about 10 separate volumes, and it is hard to build a set. Bentley manuals are produced in the USA, and have American English. I have already used it for several repairs on my 1987 240 wagon. I'd suggest you also get an older Haynes manual for the same year as your Volvo 240. The Haynes manual uses British English, but covers some details that the Bently manual misses.
If you don't repair your old Volvo, give a Bentley book to your mechanic. It will pay for itself in time saved.
