Simply the Best of Southwest Frontier History
A must read for anyone living west of the Mississippi, and an utterly engaging and scrupulously responsible rendering of the complexities of New Mexico history. Sides is a graceful, articulate writer with keen insights into the prime players of his strange and abidingly fascinating story.

An American Masterwork
Salter actually does carry the laurels as American writers'writer. A master of shorter forms in two collections, an accomplished memoirist in books about flight and the pilot's life, the author of the best mountaineering fiction we have and of a superbly moving novel of the grace and dissolution of a marriage, Salter wrote, in "A Sport and a Pastime," one indubitable masterpiece that will never be displaced. It is, quite simply, an exquisitely crafted poem about ardor, youth's ardor and its pathos in the gaze of one no longer so young, ardor for the body's life and the life of the senses, and ardor for France and for beauty so palpably and immediately evoked it will break your heart or remind you, wonderfully, that you had one or maybe still have one. No one genuinely literate should miss this book. It may change your sense of what is possible in words.
