Certainly a good read, where the Transhumanist's narrative(s) are allowed to play/flesh themselves out.
It's a great commentary on what is to happen to the future of the human race. It's highest quality is that it is realistically truthful (sincere) about what it discusses, no matter how grim, and inconvenient it all sounds at first (I love page 5 "Man is Born Of Trouble", because the lessons learned from the book of Job fly right in the face of central "doctrines" of Transhumanist religious belief, and it's inferences).
I am not sure if I am right to say it might of been a stronger book if Rubin put his own "sci-fi" ideas in this book with regard to the future just as much as much he shared about Flammarion, Cohen, Condorcet, and Drexler. Maybe it may of been a bit interesting if he did, who knows for sure?
Like some great literature out there (much of which I have yet to discover), the downside is that much of what he discusses is speculation, theories, inferences, and musings at best. He is very deep in pointing out that (like nanotechnology) every solution to humanity's, or inhumanity's future progress, may be a problem in itself that can't just be troubleshooted in an instant, and defy our own identity somehow. There's too much here I can't add!
It is an enjoyable thought provoking read overall that makes me want to read Rubin's other books, and admittedly some future solutions presented seem plausible, however, I, as the reader must always bear in mind (as I presently read the Eclipse Of Man) with books on topics such as these, that the things discussed are very fragile, frivolous, relative - subject to always change, and perceived wrongly at times. Nothing of the future of humanity (and even it's eventual eclipse) is ever guaranteed, and even if it was, may likely not turn out the way we think it ever will. Maybe in a few years, for this very reason, the content of this book may be considered obsolete?? A book to be thrown away?
In the short term, a reasonably enjoyable read, and much to leave you thinking soberly. In the long term, maybe it shouldn't stay on my shelf along side other books that contain words speaking of eternal absolutes!? For you to decide...
