    DVD Studio Pro 3
As far as I can tell, this is identical with DVD StudioPro 4 except that it is not a fat binary and thus will not install on Intel Macs. DVD StudioPro is an essential product. Apple has turned against the DVD format, and in so doing has discontinued supporting one of the major tools for authoring DVD's in the first place. You can use the command line of Terminal to install DVD StudioPro4 (as part of the Final Cut Pro Suite) on an Intel Mac, but it has become so buggy under Sierra that it is virtually unusable (especially since DVD's produced under Yosemite and Sierra tend to skip all over the place). Thus if you want to author a DVD and don't like Adobe's Encore (also discontinued!), installing DVD StudioPro 3 on an older Power PC Mac is really your best option. I've installed it on a G4 Powerbook, where it turns out disks almost as fast as it did on my Mac Pro. The trick is to demux the original file on your Intel machine via Apple's current version of Compressor, transfer the files to your Power PC machine, author them on DVD Studio, and then transfer the TS folder back to your fast machine to print the DVD via Toast. It's easier than it sounds, produces flawless DVD's, and is surprisingly quick. This package of DVD StudioPro3 even contains the luxury of a beautiful printed manual. The only thing better would be an update from Apple for this software.

    Hitler via Wagner
I bought this book because I'm a huge fan of Wagner's music and was understandably curious about why it is so universally connected with Hitler and the Nazis. Wagner was certainly an anti-Semitic creep, but he died in 1883, so how could he have been a Nazi? This book explains not only the connection between Wagner's family and the Nazis but also the prevailing role anti-Semitism played in the otherwise well educated upper classes of 19th century Europe. But it also presents a wonderful bird's eye view of the artistic circle centered around Bayreuth during the war years, and it shows many people I admire as artists acting as less than human beings under the pressure both of Nazi terror and of their own prejudices. Most significantly it presents an entirely new view (to me) of Hitler as a real lover of music and as a compulsive fan of the Wagner family, where he could play the role of "Uncle Wolf" to Richard Wagner's grandchildren—especially to the boys Wieland and Wolfgang, both so important to the "new Bayreuth" of the 1950's and so eager in their later years to pretend that Uncle Wolf had ever existed. Ms. Hamann has amassed a huge amount of original sources to present a personal and fascinating picture not only of the "other Hitler" but also of the cultural pretensions of the Third Reich.

    Kiri Sings Kern
Dame Kiri is in fine voice for this classic crossover album, and she mostly pulls it off. Her wonderful voice is most effective in ballads like "The Song is You" and "Long Ago and Far Away," although specialty numbers like "A Fine Romance" fall dangerously flat. Jonathan Tunick's arrangements are effective but over-lush and hyper-dramatic. Jerome Kern was a fine pop composer, but to be honest he works best with a lighter touch than this.
