Rushed plastic molds.
The plastic used for the model ships was rushed, in that it doesn't always line up and the point at which the spru attaches to the model is discolored from the clippers and no attempt was made to return the discoloration to the proper color. Game itself is fun, just the producer cut to many corners trying to make it cheap.
