A study in contrasts
This book contrasts the dignified life of the Russian nobility prior to the Revolution, with the decadent life in Shanghai. Elena and Sophia, the twin daughters of a nobleman in St. Petersburg, are sent to Shanghai to escape the atrocities visited upon the aristocrats by the revolutionaries. Elena maintains her dignity and eventually marries an English diplomat, while Sophia rebels against her upbringing and is drawn into the underground world of prostitution. As the plot unfolds, the Revolution brings tragedy upon tragedy to the various characters. Although the work is depressing at times, it does an excellent job of depicting Russian history, giving one a better understanding of it.
