    Jazz meets the avant garde
This is a 1961 recording of jazz saxophonist Stan Getz, playing in settings arranged by Eddie Sauter. What make it different than other sax records is the presence of a small string section performing Sauter's ambitious, busy, Bartok-inspired compositions. In most cases, Getz improvised his leads on the spot. It'll remind you of the best film soundtracks you ever heard and it rewards repeated listening. If you're a Getz fan and you haven't heard this (which I doubt)you really need to. But anyone who likes mood-setting instrumentals will enjoy it. The remastered sound on this reissue is crisp and vivid.
Weavers SIX (6) CLASSIC ALBUMS Folk Songs Around The World ALMANAC New 4 CD

    Weaving the folk song renaissance
All the '50s and '60s folkies, including but not limited to Joan Baez, Tom Paxton, Tom Rush, Phil Ochs, the young Bob Dylan and later folk-pop acts like the Kingston Trio and especially Peter, Paul and Mary, owed a debt of gratitude and inspiration to the Weavers, who along with Woody Guthrie and a few others were the first popularizers of folk music for the new mass media audience (radio, records and later, TV). Pete Seeger (banjo, guitar, recorder and vocals), who also went on to solo fame, teamed with Ronnie Gilbert (vocals), Fred Hellerman (guitar, vocals) and Lee Hays (vocals) in 1948. After the '50s Red Scare snared Seeger, a famed leftie, Erik Darling replaced him in the lineup for awhile. This "Six Classic Albums" set from UK repackager Real Gone collects some of their better known LPs on a reasonably priced 4-CD set: "The Weavers at Carnegie Hall (1957)," "Traveling On" (1959), "The Weavers At Home" (also '59), "Folk Songs Around the World" ('59), a second Carnegie Hall set from 1960, and "The Weavers Almanac." (1961). Included are such famous and influential songs as "Wimoweh," "Goodnight Irene," "Marching to Pretoria," "Kumbaya," and countless others the quartet originated/adapted or popularized. Gilbert's strong, clear soprano, Hays' booming baritone and the banjo-guitar accompaniment of Seeger and Hellerman were the distinctive elements later adapted by other ensembles.
THE COSIMO MATASSA STORY [REMASTER] NEW CD

    Roots of Nawlins R&B
From Little Richard to Fats Domino to Dave Bartholomew to Huey Smith, this look at New Orleans rhythm and blues in the 1950s -- including some of the very first actual "rock and roll" recordings -- is up to Proper's usual persnickety standards. The remastering is uniformly fine, the track dates and personnel listings show signs of meticulous research. The liner notes kind of ramble, but that's to be expected with England's Proper imprint. Matassa wasn't a musician but a studio owner and entrepreneur who serves as the common element in these wide-ranging recordings. With four discs containing 120 tracks, the value price of this imported set is possible only because of Britain's more liberal copyright laws on recorded music. If you like this kind of musical gumbo, there's a lot on the menu here, so let the bon ton roulez!
