Altogether, great performances and great entertainment - highly recommended
A first-rate BBC historical drama. King Henry himself was a fascinating character and Keith Michell is brilliant in his depiction of the monarch from youth to old age. The six wives are equally well-played and the art direction shows an admirable restraint compared to later productions. A very important part of English history as well as religious history is illuminated by Henry's checkered marital relationships, allowing a deeper understanding of the monarch as ruler, husband and father. In many ways a cautionary tale but still an absorbing first class historical drama.

A family-friendly movie, a little outdated, but still a lovely period film
1 von 1 finden das hilfreich A lovely, sweeping rendering of the Michener novel. Not terribly historically accurate and politically incorrect at times, but suitable for the whole family. Julie Andrews shows off her acting chops and holds her own with Max Von Sydow and a wonderful supporting cast. Richard Harris is a real hunk in this film, pre-Hogwarts. A slightly dated movie but still scrumptious.

Tom Hanks and a giant, slobbering dog - how can you go wrong?
A better-than-average light comedy with Tom Hanks playing his great. likable self. There's an old axiom in Hollywood never to work with dogs or babies, and the dog in this film nearly steals the show. This "Dogue du Bordeaux" (or French mastiff) has such an expressive face that you feel his emotions in every scene. According to his page on IMDB, this was the first and last appearance of this canine actor. I hope that he and Hanks enjoyed making this film as much as I enjoyed watching it. SPOILER ALERT****A warning to parents watching with young children, there is a gratuitous heartbreaking ending about 5 minutes before the last scene (wherein a bit of the heartbreak is mitigated) but it makes me cry and curse the writers every time I watch it; young children (and dog lovers) will need a hanky and a hug.
