1950's Dalias Rockabilly and R&B Classics
Although the acting is mostly amateurish and the plot simplistic, this is still one of the earliest rock and roll films. A lot of local rockabilly and R&B groups that played all over Dallas in the 1950's and 60's that just can't be seen anywhere else are captured on film. Wrestling fans will enjoy seeing wrestlers from the era just before the Von Erich era in this city playing gangsters. The commentary track by then highly spirited teenager Kay Wheeler, who appears in the film, gives a great portrait of the era in which being a rock and roll rebel had severe social repercussions. She also reveals how a radio DJ's taunts led to her creating the largest Elvis Presley fan club in the world. A fun rare gem of a film.

    Manhood
Director Bobby Roth of L.A. has been making personal films alternating with commercial ones since the 1970's. This is one of his best. A sequel to 2002's "Jack the Dog," finds the character of Jack (Nestor Carbonell) maturing as he learns to take care of his son and his sister's son who is rebeling against everything in the wake of his parent's divorce. his ex-brother-in-law (John Ritter) seems to be going down the path Jack was heading down in the first film, reveling in debauchery and blaming his inadequacies on his ex-wife. In the end Jack must pull his family together in the wake of a horrific tragedy and live up to the responsibilities of being a man. This was one of John Ritter's last film roles and it shows what a good all around actor he was. His character is alternately funny, sad, and tragic and Ritter plays all aspects masterfully.
