Quirky but great camera - durable and rugged with great optics
THIS is a great camera with a very sharp lens and a rugged body. It's biggish but light weight, and very sturdy. The viewfinder is vertically oriented - so default is portrait format. You will need to rotate 90degrees to get landscape format - just the oposite of a 35mm rangefinder. IT TAKES 120 (16 exposures) or 220 film (32exposures). Lens contrast is excellent. Viewfinder is clear with a slight bluish color cast - then brightlines marking the corners. THE LATCH for the film back is a little rudimentary. It's a locking tab, you pull it down and pop it back. It's not elegant but it works and stays closed. The "locking" is based on the stiffness of the back. This is hard to explain except by contrast to other cameras which have more elaborate locking systems. Don't expect anything smooth and sophisticated here - this is a rugged basic camera. In that way it is inventive - Fuji designers clearly looked for ways to create something durable and excellent but also cheap to make. You will not be wowed by subtlety in this camera. IMPORTANT NOTE: This camera does not have a coupled or uncoupled rangefinder. If you want a camera that will show you distance to the subject or focal Target this is camera will not do it. You'll need an aftermarket external rangefinder attached to the hot shoe for that. You must estimate distance otherwise. The focal ring is set up for hyperfocal settings... one near to mid-distance, the second is about 2meters to infinity. Since the lens is wide angle it has sufficient focal latitude to cover these distances well and keep everything sharp. If you plan to shoot landscapes there's no difficulty. And this zone method for focusing works really well for a lot of different types of shooting including candid shooting and street photography. But don't expect to be able to focus by looking through the viewfinder. That's not how this camera works. The focus ring is smooth but has notched detents at specific distances. THE SHUTTER IS NOT QUIET. It has a strong and defined sound that resonates a little in the camera body. I have a Fuji GF670 which has an incredibly quiet shutter - much quieter than a Leica - the 645 is nothing like that. There's a sharp "clack" but it is quieter than an SLR or Hasselblad and probably about as loud as any good focal plane shutter. (Note: This camera does not have a focal plane shutter - the shutter is in the lens.) THE LIGHT METER is very easy to use. It is a 3 diode light - over "+", under "-", and correct "0" exposure. There is no reminder for the lens cap - yes I had to remind myself - and yes I did feel like an idiot when I took a couple of photos with the cap on... duh. I WAS SURPRISED by this camera after my experience with the GF670. They are so different. The 670 is like driving a Mercedes. The 645 is like riving a jeep or expedition vehicle. MY FIRST OUTING with the 645 was in Death Valley. Mine came with a nice B+W filter and original folding rubber lens hood. The lens hood and filter were great protection for the lens. The hood does obstruct part of the viewfinder - you may need to take it off or press it aside for critical framing. With the UV filter on I felt comfortable leaving the lens cap off - driving and hiking with the camera always ready. It was actually a great camera for hiking. Tough and durable. Light and easy to carry and handle. It will take a lot of abuse and keep on ticking. It will go and easily shoot in places where I would never take a hasselblad.
