Top Marx
This is a fascinating book, packed with directly transcribed interviews with Groucho, Zeppo and a number of veteran actors and writers from the golden age of Hollywood who were in some way associated with The Marx Brothers. This book is not for the easily shocked or offended, and is not a cosy, rosy, diluted nostalgia trip. Groucho, especially, recounts his experiences very candidly, and with very strong language. He himself was shocked when the book was first released in 1973, as he had expected the author, Richard J. Anobile, to edit out all profanities and explicit references to what really went on in those 'innocent' days. 'The Marx Brothers Scrapbook' bears an innocent title, which is also descriptive, as the illustrated sections are packed with wonderful photographs, many of them rare, and many of them showing the Marx family (mother Minnie included) before they were movie stars, and struggling their way to the top via vaudeville. This book won't seem too shocking today, of course, 45 years after its first appearance, but there may still be some who don't care for Groucho's colourful language - bear in mind, Groucho shocked even himself! For me, I had this book many years ago, and lost it. I needed to replace it. It really is that good.

Never Fear Bond is Here
Episodic series of sketches - the film is based on the title, not Fleming's novel. It's not really possible to view this as a film with any kind of plot. There seems to be huge gaps in the narrative, and sequences do not properly join up. So, forget expecting it to make sense. This is a ride through what people think they remember of the swinging sixties, packed with psychedelia, beautiful women, crazy gadgets, knockabout fights, chases and explosions - all to the a lively score by Burt Bacharach, performed by Herb Alpert. So many stars pop up, some playing surprising roles - Deborah Kerr is one of the funniest turns in the movie. Conversely, Peter Sellers, normally brilliant, is mostly boring here ( he wanted to play it straight. Oh, well). For a film that originally carried a 'U' certificate in England (it's been recertified as a PG) it's full of racy scenes and references. On the whole it's a disjointed but (I think) enjoyable romp. It must be said, however, that the picture quality on this edition is way below par. The colours are muddy and the image, though 'widescreen' is very small on the screen, with acres of black border around the picture. No adjustment of the screen preference settings can improve this. One of the trailers in the extras gives some indication of what it should look like. It doesn't render it unwatchable, although it did turn my 43" screen into a 32" screen.

Classic German cinema from one of the masters!
The Dr Mabuse series, as directed by the great Fritz Lang is an unmissable experience for anyone who enjoys classic cinema. This set contains hours of dark entertainment - there are certainly elements in the first two films that are the stuff of nightmares - that can be watched again and again. The first film was made in 1922, the next - in sound - in 1933 (there is no English dubbed version, only sub titles), and the last (Lang's last film) is from 1960. This one does come with a version dubbed in (American) English, but there are no sub titles on the German language version. This may be different if there is a Blu-ray, but this review applies to the DVD. As well as some of the rather frightening imagery (these films - especially the first two - should probably not be shown to young children, as they will provide material for very bad dreams!), all of the films have some very thrilling chases and cliff-hanger episodes. Plus, some very intriguing plotting!
