Kermode at his best
This 1962 volume collects a range of Frank Kermode's long form reviews from the previous decade. Here we see Kermode's great range penetrating critical judgment in mid career. Many of these pieces were issued later as his Modern essays (Fontana paperback) but there are exceptions such as his wonderful essay on Evelyn Waugh written while Waugh was still alive. Kermode is never less than superb.

Lucid introductory accounts of the leading ideas of the Augustan Age.
Basil Willey's text is derived from his Cambridge Lectures covering the intellectual history of the Eighteenth Century as impacting literary culture. The work picks up from his sister volumes on the Seventeenth and Nineteenth Centuries. It does not assume any prior knowledge or training in philosophy. It addresses the ideas that informed literate culture during the Augustan Age, providing excellent insights into the components of the world views of the period's authors.
