A Writer's Voice
Janet Flanner is known as a journalist who wrote for The New Yorker from its early days into the 1960s. That's a distinction in itself. She wrote for other publications as well and wrote a novel or two and at least consulted on other writings and translations from French into English. She was a gifted writer who was appreciated by a limited audience at the time she wrote, but did not, in my opinion, have the fame she deserved. Her first collection of previously published writings was, I believe, Paris Was Yesterday, compiled after she finally returned to The United States. It is a masterpiece. These were pieces that had run in The New Yorker. What impressed me as I read this book is that the writing in her early years was very, very good, but as time passed, it got better. In other words, the writer found her distinctive voice. I've often thought that if I were teaching a course in writing, this book would be on the reading list. The pieces in Janet Flanner's World are largely from later in her life, but each has the quality of her other work. It is a joy to read. I also recommend London Was Yesterday.

Line Drawings That Help Explain the Text
This book presents a series of line drawings, rendered as woodcuts, that illustrate a story. In this case, the woodcuts are those used to illustrate a number of stories from ancient literature. They are beautiful and help to move the story along. Bringing together those used for a particular book shows what is involved without the need to buy the book, which may in turn induce one to buy it. Accordingly, this little book is a good introduction to the subject and very worthwhile. I recommend it as a good and inexpensive introduction to these works of literature.
