Caroline Sharp's art for "A Child's Garden of Verses"
This is a very nicely illustrated version of one of the most popular books of poetry for and about children published in the last 120+ years. It is a very small, almost pocket sized, book (therefore easy to carry on a trip or keep near a desk) that contains 26 of the original 64 poems, accompanied by numerous black line drawings and about a dozen very appealing color pictures of Stevenson's most popular poems. The artwork is characteristic of those illustrated in the last quarter of the 1900's and I found it to be very nicely done. The artist responds to the criteria once suggested by Stevenson himself for future editions of these charming poems first published in 1885, but not illustrated until 1895, a year after the author's death. Most anyone interested in "A Child's Garden of Verses" should enjoy this nice artistic rendition of the poems that have inspired many of us to listen, read, observe, and use our imaginations to form a brighter image of our own world.

A touching story with important messages adorned with fantastic pictures.
This delightful 'take off' on R.L. Stevenson's "Treasure Island" (a much loved and favorite pirate tale from childhood) by Mem Fox should be of great interest to anyone - especially for the superb illustrations by Kathryn Brown that follow the story line so accurately and really emphasize a number of important 'lessons' in the story. Oh, that so few wonderful tales with great social messages are adorned with equally wonderful pictures to help keep a place for both in our long-term memories! I am not sure what the "Abridged" term means, but these comments are about the hardback edition printed in Singapore in 1994.
