Frankly Bad.
0 von 1 finden das hilfreich I am a fan of old westerns and a fan of Randolph Scott. Before buying a film, I'll check out the reviews; Leonard Maltin's guide gave this one two stars; that's generous. I'll do the same, mostly because one star is "poor" and two, "below average." This is well below Randolph Scott's average, even though, as I recall, he had a hand in its production. It is simply a bad movie.
The plot is made up as it goes along and it goes along, with cliches and contrivances that are neither believable nor related to what would have made a better story. It's like no one bothered to edit the film or review the script. And I'm not a stickler for believability and western detail. I love old B-westerns and most singing cowboys, but this became painful to watch. I just wanted it to end. The feeling was like reading a bad western novel where the writing is bad and the story is bad so you just flip ahead chapter after chapter to get to the end.
It pains me to say I didn't enjoy a Randolph Scott movie, but I didn't. If you're like me, you may have to watch it for yourself. Keep an open mind, but don't say I didn't warn you.

Great Entertainment!
Another outstanding collection of old-time cowboy movies from the 30's, 40's and 50's. I get excited every time I hear the soundtracks start, whether it's a depression-era orchestra or the song of a singing cowboy. It's a return to a simple time of timeless themes. Okay, okay...the good guy wins (after a couple close calls) and finally gets the girl - the comic sidekicks still make me laugh and the plots still hold some surprises. I'd rather watch the open spaces and hear the beat of horses' hooves than endure a single computer generated car chase or explosion. This is the stuff family time is made of, or just a quiet night at home. An outstanding entertainment deal. Enjoy!

Real. Original. Literature.
Since receiving this two-volume set less than one week ago, I have finished three of the novels in volume two, the fifties, each one superb. The selection is diverse and impressive. Before purchasing this set, I had been buying paperback copies piecemeal, at a cost beween $8-$10 a copy, still well worth the money. This set presents a broad range from the best writers. The books themselves are beautifully printed with notes and biographical material.
This is great writing. Maybe the genre doesn't get the credit it deserves. Many of these were translated into film, leaving the books in the wake of their popular movies. This writing holds its own with anything assigned in high school or college: Dickens, Melville, Tolstoy. Even better, they are composed from shared language and experience, tough and personal. This set is a reminder of the power of books to free the mind. Cut off the television, stay home and travel within.
