Much better than expected, benefits worth the shortcomings.
Well, this was an unexpected purchase. I was sure I wanted an Android tablet, or perhaps an iPad. I never would have deliberately chosen a Surface or any Microsoft computer, because they've just never pleased me much. But I'm actually liking it. The reason for purchase was so I could work (i.e. edit documents trackably, and create complex mailings) when at a cafe or bar, and only the Surface comes close to this capability. Google has just discontinued QuickApps. AndrOpenOffice is unusable, taking up most of the screen with useless toolbars, and going into paroxysms of redraws every time you try to actually use it. Microsoft Office for Android refuses to find your files unless they're on OneDrive. So if you want a real, trackable version of Word, the Surface is key. Likewise if you want to assemble a mail with lots of copy-pasting of URL's and text, it's good to have a copy-paste that works everywhere, not just when Android or iOS happens to want to give it to you. The iPad and Android tablets are excellent for games, fun and cool utilities, great apps for musicians and artists. If I were one of those, I'd have one. But for just getting Word, Excel, and Email to work, it looks like it's still Microsoft's ball game. And the tablet's quite good. Balancing the lack of apps, there's a perfectly usable desktop and desktop browser that nicely runs the web versions of all the missing apps. AND rather friendly (even contrite) support from Microsoft themselves, who are suddenly becoming intensely customer-focussed, in contrast to their 90s behaviour. It has a clever and useful design, doesn't weigh too much, has an excellent detachable/fold-back keyboard/cover with full detection thereof (and no fiddling with bluetooth settings), a pleasant user interface which only took a day or two to figure out, and some reasonably consistent UI conventions that fall back into standard Windows crap when all else fails. Word and Excel work like the thing was designed for them. (It was.) Major complaint: OneDrive is still mandatory for storing them. You can't use your Dropbox or Gdrive account with Office on this tablet. You'll have to copy over the directories you use onto OneDrive first. Sad and annoying but there you go. There are very few apps available for, well, anything. But I can use my smartphone for those things. For work, I've got my Surface 2. Important: There are two very different kinds of Surface, not adequately explained to consumers unless you do your research. One (called Pro) uses a variant of Windows 8.1 which is mostly compatible with Windows programs. You can generally think of this as a small laptop - it will do all the same things, including requiring a power plug wherever you go, since it has a laptop-sized battery capacity too. And is just as virus-prone as any laptop. The other (not called Pro) uses a walled-and-curated version of Windows 8.1 called Windows RT, with more modern security. It can only use apps from its own (tiny) appstore. It can't run Office Macros or most Windows software. But this version has a full 9-12 hour battery life, like your iPad. It is much less likely to be infected. I chose the latter and I'm happy.

Beautiful screen and camera, great pen
I really expected longer battery life. In continuous use its only good for about 8-10 hours. But it wasn't purchased new so I think its not the phone's fault. But the phone is and remains the best one out there
