One of the better Alistair MacLeans
I bought this book to read more of Alistair MacLean, and because it was set in a cold, wintery location like his other book The Secret Ways. It is well written and the mystery is exciting for the first 80% of the book. I have to say it does drag on a bit for that last 20%. The climax isn't anything too glamorous compared to today's literature but for it's time it's a good read. If you like Alistair's stuff, this is definitely in his upper 1/3 pieces of work.

Excellent Cold War / WWIII Reference on Soviet Military Thinking
This is a great book. Having read many a book over the years about Soviet hardware, I recently came upon the more theoretical subject of maneuver warfare. While this description of Soviet doctrine is no longer current (this is geared towards the great pan-European tank war of WWIII that never happened), it is an excellent historical reference of that time period. It starts with a general description of the overall philosophy of the Soviet government and military, an overview of the day to day operations of the military, and then dives into strategic level operational planning. The scientific approach they used (those nomograms!!!) is a real eye opener and helps explain why they only thought in terms of brigades and above.
I recommend you read the historical fiction books Red Army, Red Thrust, and Team Yankee before or after you read this.
