A lively and entertaining history of Detective fiction in the pulp magazines!
Ron Goulart's 1988 history of Detective fiction in the pulp magazines harks back to his excellent 1965 anthology, The Hardboiled Dicks, Sherbourne Press, 1965. Evident from his introductions therein, he was already an eminent scholar of the field. Some of the material in the 1988 work may be expanded from his earlier work, Cheap Thrills (An Informal History of the Pulp Magazines), Arlington House, 1972. Most, but not all, of the authors, editors, stories and magazines referred to in the 1988 text are found in the index at the back of the book. Goulart quotes generously from several stories to illustrate his points. This makes for a lively and entertaining account.

SELLING THE WILD WEST: POPULAR WESTERN FICTION 1860-1960 by Christine Bold is a comprehensive study of the western. Though dense with detail, the narrative held my interest. I have gained a more clear understanding of a wide ranger of publishing and story forms.
