Garmin Pilot III Aviation GPS Bundle

Good Unit But Dated

The Garmin PIlot III in its day 20 years ago was a remarkable unit. With a bit of patience and research, it can still be a great asset for a VFR pilot and plane. Most of these units have outdated software and databases. While software updates are free, one is harder to track down. The Jeppsen database is $49.95 per 28 day cycle. For my use, I don't typically update the database that often, relying on other methods for current frequencies, airspace, etc. I have several of these units in different planes. The two latest were unable to display correct date, which effected sunrise, sunset accuracy. It is a simple fix once you have the internal clock updated software installed, which takes less time to perform than it takes to read this paragraph. Still, it is something to consider with this old pre-Y2K software. In short, these units fit my needs very nicely. In 2012 my brother and I flew our respective Piper J-3 Cubs to Oshkosh for the 75th Anniversary of the Cub, each of us using a Pilot III, both updated with latest database before departure. They both performed flawlessly and are extremely easy to use. If you are somewhat computer savvy and can perform software and database updates, they represent some of the smallest, cheapest and useful aviation GPS units around.
