Great guidance
A very good quality book on techniques with lots of step by step demonstrations. The authors paintings are also great inspiration.

Already a treasured book
I am an intermediate-level representational/realist painter who has been working hard to improve my skills in painting landscapes in oils from life for the past four years and this book more than meets my needs in terms of insights and inspiration.
It does, however, assume some prior knowledge of the basics of oil painting. It doesn’t go through information that a total beginner would need in enough detail, in my view.
I heard about this book and another book by Emile Gruppé ‘on the grapevine’ - from a US art tutor who did an online talk on what had inspired him and helped him to develop as an artist.
I already had his other book and knew his style of writing and explanation to be clear, straightforward, and comprehensive. It includes a good amount theory of colour and tone/value (as well as drawing) but a large portion of the book uses the authors work to explain how he applies these principles are applied to real life subject matter, in order to turn the subject matter into excellent paintings with a clear focal point and colour effects that support the aims of the painting.
I really can’t recommend this book highly enough. I will be re-reading and re-reading for many months if not years and trying to absorb all the wonderful instruction that it offers.
