The rise and decline of JMC....
The tracks are presented in chronological order of release. The first 3 songs have so much 'feedback as a musical instrument' that I just skip those immediately. The next 5 tracks, from the albums Psychocandy and Darklands (1985-87), are really good - they're at their peak! Then skip one more track and you get 2 more good songs from Automatic (1989). But the rest of the disc (1990-98) has that generic 1990s pop rock/alternative sound and production. I paid less for this CD than it would've cost to download 7 songs, so it was worth it.

    Misplaced nostalgia....
That "song" has been used as a comedic punchline; at least now I get the joke. It's worse than I remembered, and it's not just the bad mixing and dubbing. I get it that it appeals to a shallow or superficial self indulgence, or that some people like it for cheezy "mood music" due to its hedonistic nature. But there are so many other choices out there that wouldn't necessitate demeaning yourself or degrading your partner. What I don't understand is how people would think this is "spiritual" music. I mean, c'mon - Principles of Lust! Since when is lust a virtue? I'm not a religious person, but I'm pretty sure that's one of the "deadly sins" or something like that. Oh well, I suppose many would be deceived as the story goes. It must be the use of the word "meditation" and monks chanting with biblical references and other mundane things like opera and foreign language that New Agers would perceive as exotic and therefore spiritual. Pseudospiritual. Whatever.... I'm sorry that I wasted $3 on this. If you're a fan of electronic music with even slightly developed tastes, I recommend skipping this one. Otherwise, I really don't care....

    Painfully dated
In theory, this should be awesome. We have three supremely talented musicians in one super group: Bernard Sumner (New Order/Joy Division), Johnny Marr (The Smiths/The The), and Neil Tennant (Pet Shop Boys). But in practice, it fails. Instead of showcasing the unique creative talents of each member, it comes across as a jumbled mash of manufactured pop trite with an overbearing early 90s dance club synth throughout most of it. As a long time New Order fan, I suddenly have a new-found respect for Republic. Marr's skills were wasted on this, and Tennant's songs were the highlights if you can call them that. There was a popular single called Disappointed that was written for a terrible movie called Cool World. It's included on the double disc edition of this album, but not on the early releases like this one. The second album, Raise the Pressure, is a vast improvement. It features Karl Bartos (Kraftwerk) on keyboards for a half dozen tracks which were co-written with him. The third album, Twisted Tenderness, is my favorite. It hints at the direction New Order would take post Y2K. Bottom line is that I would only recommend this album to die hard fans of these individual artists - if only for novelty and curiosity - and only if you can find a cheap used copy.
