Gretchen sings Mickey
I waited in anticipation for delivery of this album and must say it did not live up to my expectations. I've been a Mickey Newbury fan since the early 70's and I listen to Mickey's albums with a sort of Reverence. Now I'm also a big fan of Gretchen Peters and her husband Barry Walsh but for me most of these song arrangements are overworked.
Mickey fought for years with record companies to have his songs published the way he liked to play them, but everyone wanted to add strings and orchestrations, which drowned the beauty of the songs. Mickey liked to sing his songs with just a Nylon stringed guitar accompanying his voice. Lots of singer's have recorded Mickey's songs over the years and I believe the best covers are the ones which stay faithful to the original arrangement.
Its still a beautiful album, but I prefer Mickey singing Mickey.
