WAMPLER SOVEREIGN DISTORTION BOOSTER EFFECTS PEDAL BOOST FREE USA SHIPPING
    05. Apr 2017
    Satriani
I keep remembering Satriani, and Timmons. At least the sound this pedal produces thru my rig, it sure does make me remember tunes from those artists. It appears to have less gain than Wampler's Dracarys. But the sound has just enough definition to remind me of Satriani. I don't think I'd use this one for metal; that's what the Dracary's and Triple Wreck would do better. But that leaves a whole lot of tunes I can do reasonably well with this one pedal. After fiddling with it a lot, I figured I don't want to set this pedal's Gain to max. I found I like it best with Gain at 1:00, Boost ON, and Bright OFF. Just a bit more than crunch, but not full-on distortion. Then for leads, I ADD Keeley RedDirt with its own knobs at around 12:00. Yea, that gets me that tone and sustain I was talking about. Of course you want to know what's in the rig. OK... Marshall JTM and JMP (60's and 70's). Gibson LP R8 2003 and Ibanez RG450 1991 yes, I do have a good idea how lucky I am to play with such toys. Gotta tell ya, this rig really likes Keeley overdrives and Wampler distortions. It dang near plays itself.

There is something unique about this vintage.
Folks, I'm blown away by how easy it is to dial good tone from this thing. I use TS9 with Keeley mod, using BurrBrown chip. It is easy to dial good tone from the TS9. By conrast, TS9 has somewhat muted high end and less tight bottom than Gov'nor. TS9 also seems more violin-like, less aggressive, than Gov'Nor. I use John Nau Spoonful, with 4558D chip. It is easy to get 'sweet' midrange, and slight overdriven tone. By contrast, Spoonful seems to keep favoring midrange vs wider spectrum from Gov'Nor. And certainly spoonful has a lot less distortion. I used (no longer) Boss Metal Zone MT-2 stock. It was hard to avoid getting ice picks, or nasal, or boomy. Yes, MT-2 had more distortion than Gov'nor, but not nearly as controllable. I used (no longer) Marshall Gov'Nor 2 stock. I had to hunt for good tone in that pedal, by contrast to original Gov'nor, where I have to hunt for bad tone. That's the contrast-and-compare. Cost? I paid 225. Yea, I paid 80 bucks too much. I knew that. I wanted this specific one, from this vendor. I could have also gotten clones cheaper. Instead, I wanted to get as close to Gary Moore's sound on Still Got the Blues. Now that I can push a 66 JTM or a 1972 SLP with '68 clone board, I get really, really close. Nah, I can't play like Gary. never will. But every now and then, I can follow his recordings pretty dang close. This is a pedal I will keep 'till I croak, and pass it on to my kid. // queasyRider

like this distortion pedal the most
I like Dracarys for distortion, more than any other distortion pedal I've played. The sound is full, it sustains longer, it is not ice pick or too loose on the bottom, and it sounds well balanced from high to low frequency, with just a slight mid bump, perfect for lead. - And that's just with the knobs pretty much at 12:00 ! Yes, MetalZone 2 has a bottom end that's tighter. But it's hard to get a sound like what I described out of that pedal. Yes, Marshall ShredMaster (original) gets in the same ballpark, but it does not sustain as long or has as full of a sound as this one. Pinnacle Deluxe v2 is also in the ballpark, but I can't dial the mids to sound like Dracarys'. Triple Wreck is just as full, but its bottom end is either too much or too little depending on how you dial it. SloStortion has sustain, but it accentuates low-mids and is not anywhere near as balanced as this pedal. Marshall Gov'Nor (original) has clearer notes, but is not as full and sustaining as this one. And of course there's all the new-production Marshall pedals, and even the OCD which do well, but don't maintain the balance as well as this one seems to. I guess I would think that if Satriani were to write something that leans more to hard rock, or metal (but not industrial metal), then he might want a sound like this pedal gives. And much like the original Gov'Nor, it's easy to find useful tones when tweaking the knobs; unlike so many other pedals where the range of useful tones is very narrow. It's pretty easy to dial in sound for 80's rock and metal, 90's alternative, etc. I don't know that it works equally well with everyone's rig. But I know it really likes 1966 Marshall JTM 45 and 1974 Marshall JMP 100 (with '68 board replica), and it likes 2003 Gibson LP R58 with Seth Lover pups, and other humbucker axes. I wish this pedal had been available 10 yrs ago, that would have saved me a lot of mula.
