Outstanding Adaptation!
I have watched several adaptations of this movie including David Lean & Roman Polanski's. The charcter development here was superb. In the other versions so much is skimmed over. Here I truly felt Nancy's love 4 Oliver & how he represented the child she never had. My heart ached 4 her. I felt that Bill Sykes wasn't born. He was made. I felt how Fagin tragically exemplified how poorly Jews were treated. Yes, we all have a choice about who we choose to be. However, in that era, the cruel poverty, the vile treatment of children & the poor. Who's to say that I wouldn't have ended up being 1 of these tragic creatures. Sykes' demise was different than the book or other adaptations but it exemplified his treagedy and his humanity. Thus, near the end of this Series, I was ovecome with emotions. I cried 4 Nancy, Fagin & even Hardy's potrayal of Sykes. I saw the sad irony in Dodger claiming bullet & someday becoming just like Bill Sykes. Of course, I was delighted for Oliver's HEA. I rejoiced at Mr. Monk's unveiling & comeuppance. Felt sorry for Mr. Bumble in choosing to marry who he did. Man, i was 1 big blob of emotions. Lol. I Loved the amplification of each character in this version. Also, Oliver is a bit less timid than in other adaptations but it worked here. A delightul cinematic experience. Artistic liberties were taken but I still highly recommed this version for a richer Oliver Twist & Dickensian experience!!
