Surround sound is for true audiophiles ;-)
While 'audiophiles' are busy moving to stereo because that makes more bandwidth available to each channel I doubt that the difference can be heard epseically using optical input. I recall when bi-wired speakers were the in thing for those looking for the best, I see that how that's been dropped at the highest end amps, e.g. the Naim Superuniti @ c. £4k only has two connectors per speaker - 4 in all, plus a phono out for an active subwoofer.
But to give up surround sound with so many movies etc. mastered in 5 or 7.1 seems crazy: I love to feel immersed.
The upside of the new stereo craze is that some amazing 7.1 amps are available for very little, especially if they're combined with an FM receiver as in this model.
The only critisicsm I have is that a mono feed can't be split into more than 2 of your speakers, so old mono b/w movies aren't as great as they could be. But Dolby PLIIx does a great job of converting stereo to 7.1.

IT'S A GREAT TIME TO BUY AN XBOX 260 ESPECIALLY IF IT'S A SLIM AND LITTLE USED
Although I am first and foremost a PlayStation afficionado as many XBox One games continue to be released for the XBox 360 it's still a great console to have, especially if you get a little used one with 2 controllers, Kinect and several dance games! Kinect is better than a PS2 dance mat or PS3 Move controller and plan to use them like I did. I waited about 14 years for it to be available at a low price and bought it primarily because I wanted to play its launch exclusive Perfect Dark Zero, which still looks good :-)
