Quirky and accomplished
When Berwald was born in 1796 Haydn was still busy and when he died in 1868 Brahms had produced his first piano concerto qnd Tchaikovsky his first symphony. Quite a range of styles over his lifetime and Berwald's music reflects this. Always his own man, quirky and accomplished his music includes classical and romantic elements unique to him and this disc includes some of his best music and is a welcome addition to the symphonies.

Always individual
This is volume one of the two-volume complete set of Berwald music for piano trio, including fragments.
Composing was never Berwald day job and recognition in Sweden only came late in his life, but Liszt recognised his gifts and encouraged him. His music is very individual as Berwald explores the possibilities of the new Romantic movement and the established Classical idiom. Like C P E Bach at the dawn of the Classical era the results can be surprising!
