Funny, empowering
Shonda Rhimes takes you on a journey through her own metamorphosis from a "No!" person to a "Yes!" person, not just "Yes!" to different social experiences, but "Yes!" to saying "No!" to things that hurt her spirit. A funny, uplifting book that brings kinship to all women .... mothers, sisters, bosses, employees....we all have so much in common!

Pleasantly readable book!
1 von 1 finden das hilfreich I enjoyed this author's style. Good read, not weighty with extravagant use of words or description. Chapters quick, interesting and concise. Engaging story...likeable characters. The science of perfumery was colorfully described within the context of the story and brings the reader to an appreciation of the emotional responses associated with scent. It's a heartfelt story of loss, redemption, and a mother's love.

Wordy, long on description
I was interested in reading a classic novel by an American author I've not yet enjoyed. I chose You Can't Go Home Again by Thomas Wolfe because it was a familiar classic title and as such, I imagined an interesting story. In my opinion, there is little "story" in this book; however, it is packed with long wordy paragraphs which, although very rich in description, become weary. Nevertheless, the phrases used to describe 1920's -1940's America, from poor to rich, are memorable and paint a vivid picture of life during those years. The subject of the book, George Webber is a disillusioned author who wrote a book about his hometown that angered its citizens. As the story progresses, there is much social commentary about the ills of the time.... greed, the corrupting effects of wealth and fame, economic injustices. The book is said to be autobiographical in that Thomas Wolfe penned a scathing portrayal of his hometown in Look Homeward, Angel, one of his earlier novels.
