A little crowded, I prefer the classic image of the Knight and Death playing Chess.

This is classic Bergman. The atmosphere is tangible, engaging and full of pathos. The central performances are stunning. I never tire of this film, it is a window on the medieval world with all its cruelty, superstition and struggle, and is a poignant reminder of the futility of conflict.Much copied, a very influential film..
