Lost Cd, Found !
3 von 3 finden das hilfreich For over 12 yrs, I made on/off attempts to locate and discover a recording of a Gerry Rafferty track, that had a big haunting sound, with 'lost love' lyrics. Ideal for my situation at the time. As often happends, if you don't get to hear the title given out, you assume it is probably, the most repeated line. All the usual big store outlets had'nt a clue what I wanted, and none of the artists cd's on sale listed this track. Having joined the internet 'club' I was able at last to discover that the album was a 1993 release called ' On a wing and a Prayer'and the track in question was, as I thought,'Don't speak of my heart'. Strangely, when I saw the distinctive front artwork, it struck a cord--don't know why.The album had been re-released in 2002, and I was fortunate to obtain a new copy on Ebay. When you hear music of this period, especially from such an accomplished muscian and writer like Gerry Rafferty, you realise the dramatic fall in quality of recorded music, that has taken place in the last decade. I'm talking of music, not just with melody, but wonderful meaningful lyrics, that also describe human relations in all it's complexity. The 'sleeve notes' which come in a substantial booklet, list all the lyrics, playing times, and muscians involved. Obviously, as with most 'popular' music, the dominant theme IS love, but mostly, in this case, lost love. I would be guessing here, but I get a strong feeling that Gerry was writing about very personal issue's at this time, so emotive are the theme's. The balance between rhythmic music and ballads is spot on, with strong dance beats, some jazz echo's, and even a touch of gospel rhythm. Add to this, wonderful sweeping strings and keyboard, and you have a very full sound, making for a satisfying 'programme. For me, this album has that rare claim, no 'dud' tracks. I took an instant liking to it, which is not too common these day's. How often do you skip tracks on certain cd's? I doubt you will do so with 'On a Wing and a Prayer'. Fully reccomended. Phil Croft.

A great reminder of what is lacking today.
This DVD is not only the most eclective example of these vastly underated musicians work, it-to my mind, underlines the sad comparative deteriation of present musical standards, especially during the period since this DVD was issued. Some say that the Korgis output over the years was too fragmented and fell between several stools, making it difficult for fans to associate with them. I say that all it proved was their versatility and refusal to be like most of the others of the period. In short, they stuck to their musical ideals. Many top groups have said that they simply wrote and performed what they liked and hoped for the best, some got away with it, others struggled. As a great admirer of the Korgis--in all their line-ups, I enjoyed this DVD, with it's variety of music and visuals, the 'unplugged' set proves their musicianship results from many years at the top of their game. --no overnighters here. Whether you're new to this band, or avid fans, I know you will enjoy this treat.

Bedtime Story
This is one of those films that sticks in the memory, and gets onto your 'best ever' lists. Here is yet another example, where an original production knocks a remake into a cocked hat, as they used to say. Here I'm refering to the Michael Caine, Steve Martin version of a few years ago. They are two great actors, and favourites of mine but, they did'nt quite spark as much as the great suarve David Niven, and the rare, and therefore all the more enjoyable, comic performance of Marlon Brando. Steve Martins performance had too many references to Jerry Lewis in it (too nerdish to be convincing) and I was never a fan of Caine when he played uppercrust types: not after 'Bromhead' anyway)Niven of course, is completely at home in his role, but Brando's slightly thuggish and uncouth, small time conman charactor, is set to be taught a lesson in both premier league role playing, humility, and even morality, at the hands of the master. The sharp and witty exchanges , and comic interplay between them is a joy, and a very young Shirley Jones ( the target for both her money and affection) brings a fresh innocence to remind the protaggonists, that there ARE bounderies, that should not be crossed. I'll make an admission here, I had actually forgotten the name of the original film ( not having seen it for ten years)--' Bedtime Story', because the recent remake had had a far more potent and telling title---'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels' I had actually thought this was the original title---no wonder I could'nt find it on ebay. Highly reccomended--pgcroft
