A princess comes to DVD
7 von 13 finden das hilfreich The newest release in Disney's "Platinum Edition" series is the 1951 film "Cinderella". Just about everyone knows the story (nice girl stuck with evil stepmother and stepsisters, Royal ball, fairy godmother, and so on) so I won't waste your time rehashing it but I will say that the Disney writers have put a few unexpected and welcome twists on this familliar tale. Visually it has great animation, beautiful backgrounds and some great special effects animation (remember this was produced in the time before computers and all of the shadows, magic sparkles and bubbles [yes, bubbles] were hand-drawn. The voice performances are good with standout performances by Ilene Woods as Cinderella, Eleanor Audley as the Stepmother, and Verna Felton as the Fairy Godmother. The second disc has a lot of bonus features that I have not looked at yet. By this time you're probably asking, "if it's so great why did you rate it only 4 out of 5?" One word, "mice". They're annoying. They play a key role in the story but that virtue is almost lost due to how overly cute they are portrayed. This DVD will be a welcome addition to your collection.

Worth Owning
Coco was Katherine Hepburn's only musical. Unfortunately it opened the same year as "Applause", and was overshadowed by it. The cast album is fascinating. Hepburn does sing rarely but she gets the speak-rhythm right along with the music. Her characterizaion is perfect throughout with her really being Coco throughout her songs. You do hear true singing on the album. It's not Lerner's best lyrics but they are passable and Previn's music is always tuneful and vsits different veins from jazz-based to "true" Broadway ballad. The album is out of print so grab it up if you find it.

One to definately add to your collection
If you were to own only one Disney animated feature this should be the one. It was nominated for multiple Oscars in 1992 (including Best Picture) and won for best score and song. The story is compelling without getting cloying or too cute. The dialogue is witty and well-written, the visuals are beautiful (particularly the opening backstory sequence told via stained-glass windows), the songs are tuneful and never get on your nerves and the voice casting is perfect. Paige O'Hara fills her characterization of Belle with clear, self-motivated and intelligent thinking and actions (all of which are rarely seen in a Disney heroine). Angela Lansbury is a delight as Mrs. Potts and the other actors deliver the goods and then some. The direction is well-paced and has no slow "are we done with this part yet?" sections. The DVD extras include a pencil-test of the film, and a song that was fully animated then deleted because it was felt to slow down the action. I can't give enough praise to this gem. It won't bore the kids and is fully engaging for adults. It is currently out of print ("on moritorium" as Disney says) but try to find a new copy - there are some listed. It's money well spent.
