Brideshead Reconsidered
I watched Brideshead Revisited on DVD, 38 years after first seeing it on television, as a consequence of rereading all of Evelyn Waugh's fiction, also after many years neglect. Viewing the DVDs reminded me of the television experience, when each episode was fuelled by a week's anticipation and the ritual of sitting down to Alistair Cooke and Masterpiece Theatre at a prescribed time. Today, I viewed the 11 episodes in 5 successive days, and with a cynic's eye to what I now consider the series' cavalierly handled issues of class discrimination, sexual orientation, and racism, and, in the Bonus Features of the 30th Anniversary Collection, with an analyst's eye to how well, or poorly, Jeremy Irons, Anthony Andrews, Diana Quick, Nickolas Grace, and Jane Asher had aged in 30 years.
