A major letdown
This is the least well-written (and ultimately least successful) book in the Joe Pickett series by author C.J. Box.
His attempt to write two unrelated storylines just does not work.
The plot involving the Pickett family starts out promising, but it becomes plodding (and, actually, somewhat improbable). For the most part, the Nate Romanowski plot is unrelated to the other story. Joe Pickett's involvement at the end seems like an afterthought.
Both finales wrap up so quickly that there are details missing, holes in the plot and also some unresolved situations from the previous book, "Dark Sky."
Two of the three Pickett daughters are barely present in the narrative. Wife Marybeth outdoes Joe with her detective work. Joe himself seems to be sleepwalking throughout the entire book. Nate Romanowski and the people he deals with are caricatures.
Some readers have wondered whether author C.J. Box was under a hard deadline and needed to wrap up the book quickly, without a thorough editing process. Others postulate that the author has too much going on with other book series and consulting on the "Joe Pickett" tv series. Another theory suggests that the bulk of "Shadows Reel" may be the work of a ghost writer. Any or all of these theories are possibilities. But whatever the cause, "Shadows Reel" is not at all in the same league as the other books in the Joe Pickett series.
