I saw this movie a few months ago and it has haunted me ever since. Sally Potter's film YES offers a refreshing departure from mainstream Hollywood fare. YES is a stunning study about human connection (and disconnection). At the core of the film is an unhappy marriage, resulting in partners who stray. Joan Allen finds a passionate man of like mind and begins a torrid affair with him, but soon the film is exploring their differences rather than what united them. The dialogue is mesmerizing, and maybe only a specific audience will appreciate the fact that the entire script is written in rhyming couplets - which sound so natural in the hands of these gifted actors that it took me 20 minutes to notice! Balancing the dramatic tension is the hilarious narrative by the maid of the household who is determined to reveal to us everything she has observed while performing her job. This film is so deeply layered that it requires many more viewings to uncover all it has to offer - which is why I have bought a copy for my library. It will be viewed many times over the years.
