This was a pioneering recording of the 1893, intimately scaled version of the Requiem; I prefer it to the full orchestra version.

Beautiful, touching performance of the small-scaled1893 version of the Requiem, as edited by the composer and conductor John Rutter. It is more touching and subtle than the full orchestra version, impressive though that also is. Several short pieces, including the lovely Messe Basse, make an attractive bonus.

Saint-Saens: Symphony No. 3; Paray: Mass for the 500th Anniversary of the Death

Great Saint-Saëns 3rd, uneven but impressive mass by Paray

This recording pairs Saint-Saëns' best symphony with a mass by conductor-composer Paul Paray. I find the mass impressive in parts, though not quite the masterpiece some have claimed it to be. I'm glad to have it, and it's certainly better than most music from conductors who composed on the side. The performance of the Third Symphony is simply a knockout. Not only is the performance first-rate, the sound is amazingly good for its era and good even by current standards. If you have equipment that is flat and clean down to 30 Hz or so, the last movement will be felt as well as heard!

Wonderful performances in first-rate sound. Stands comparison with classic accounts like Fleisher/Szell and Arrau/C. Davis. Product arrived a day early and in condition advertised.
