Well written account of an extraordinary life

If this book had dealt only with Robert Lenkiewicz’s philosophy and creative oeuvre it would have been much shorter. In fact, stories of his ancestry, his childhood and accounts given by his friends, his lovers and his two siblings fill a major part of the book and provide the main source of interest for the general reader.
The story told here, like history itself, emerges from the silence of many and the voices of a few. One missing voice is that of Gillian Pearce, the enigmatic “Mary” of the famous “Mary Notebook.” I have often thought how fascinating it would be to read a “Robert Notebook” by Mary. This lady, however, practiced the genre of silence at the material time and presumably has continued to do so ever since. Others, such as Jim Pascoe and Pat Parker, could have made rich and articulate contributions to the story but died prematurely. Even now, I can still scarcely believe that they are gone.
I have known, or at least met, most of those who contributed their reminiscences of Robert. Only one indulges in what Dr. Price elsewhere calls “fabulation”. The others speak from the heart.
The book gave me new insights into Robert’s mind and talents. We shall not see his like again.
