Could have been excellent!
Lovely design, brightly coloured and a clever idea to add the place names separately. So, excited about the real potential for an educational experience. But the lack an additional larger and more accurate illustration hampered efforts particularly as the detail of the only picture on the box top was obscured in several places by logos, makers names etc. Moreover the box picture omitted at least one feature-a boat- which had us all guessing as to the location of pieces and wondering about the accuracy of the rest. Sadly couldn't persuade the resident seven year old to join in but as it stretched the skills of the adults, ( 3 hours x 3 adults- still not finished! ), would suggest that the 7+ age range may have have been a little optimistic despite the good sized pieces which fitted well together.

Durable, educational and fun: Playmobile has it all!
This tiny set 'Fireman with hose' was brought as a compliment to the bigger fire engines which take the brave fire fighter crews high in the air to tackle those burning high-rise buildings. It was intended to extend the action and the interest to the street level via the water main, and in this not only illustrates team-working but offers an insight into how and why underground services are accessed. (The road construction theme would fit into this set).
One of the appeals of Playmobil has to be its durability. Ebay itself is testament to this. There is a flourishing second hand market for Playmobil with both vintage and contemporary figures and sets holding their value well. If Playmobil isn't passed down through the generations, and by many accounts this often what happens, sellers are able to recuperate some of the initial outlay even when the sets are incomplete or have been joined with others as in the case of the 'fireman with hose' mentioned above. In my experience it is difficult to damage Playmobil, but there will occasionally be a breakage or small pieces will go missing. However whatever the age of your particular playmobil set the chances are you will be able to source spare parts, and the manual and instructions for constructing the sets, via Ebay. This certainly helps Playmobil's resale value. This means that not only is Playmobil itself durable, but so too is the after-sales support.
As its entertainment and the educational value, I believe it all comes down to the level of detail incorporated into each small component of the models and figures. Taking the fire-fighting scene as an example, the entertainment comes with the action, action, action that is called for when people and property need to be made safe in an emergency, lights and sirens included!
The question as to why some Playmobil firemen have breathing apparatus and protective clothing, why some are wearing gloves and visors, why some are shouting through loud speakers or calling on mobile phones; why the police and ambulance are on the scene, why fire hoses come in different lengths, what use is an axe and a rescue stretcher and a two foot extending ladder and cage (Playmobil fire engines are remarkably well equipped) and so on, provides the learning input. All aspects that growing minds might take on board while letting their imagination run free adds painlessly to the educational as well as the entertainment value of Playmobil. Fire-fighting is just one thematic example as to why so many children and adults love Playmobil. There are lots more. Searching for fossil dinosaurs in the Antarctic ice is another great mind-expanding theme which can be matched with tales of real life dinosaur research for would-be scientists. But this is for another review.
Meanwhile remember, as someone has already, and very adroitly, when you are tidying away your children's Playmobil after packing them off to bed, you are only pretending to put it away. What you are really doing is playing with it yourself. I have been caught out -and so will you. Oh yes.
