A Life's Sunset With Grief and Grace
Another of Flexner's books on Washington. The author "has" the man he writes about understanding both his weaknesses (few) and his strengths (many). This was a sad period for Washington as he tried to steer the new nation and its very unusual government. Men who he considered his friends turned against him as he tried to steer a course between the rocks of federalism and anti-federalism. No matter what he chose, far too many disagreed and blamed him personally for what they considered as betrayals. Sometimes even the best of motives doesn't help. However, on of Washington's greatest gifts to the nation and people he loved was the peaceful transfer of power from his presidency (the original) and John Adams, the next president. Such a transfer in an age in which power was ALWAYS conserved to the powerful, was without precedent.
